Alone in company

This is "Luncheon of the boating party" by Renoir and I fell in love with it. The woman in the center (highlighted) is a perfect representation of the loneliness that can be experienced even in a crowd.

interesting that you perceived it thus. i like this painting too, though my reading of it wasn't quite that.

This is one of my favs too... i remeber reading a long article in reader's digest on this one... each and every character in the painting was spoken about in that article...

I am sorry to say but i don't think she is the perfect example of loneliness..'coz she is speaking to the guy sitting besides her..ache se dekh..but just hav a look at the bearded man..he looks so lonely..he is the perfect example..

reminds of the hindi saying:

"sab"ke beechmain, "khud"ko pana
mushkil bada kaam hai
"mujhi"ko lekar fir "hum"ban jana
jina isi ka naam hai! :)

My take:
1)she is a vegetarian while the food served is not her types
or
2)she dosent understand english well while ppl around her converse in english
or
3)she is literally bored

after much thought and deliberation, i have arrived at the conclusion that the woman is abs bored not lonely bored, coz the guy next to her blabbering abt some topic which is of no interest to her and is it just me or is every one in the party just looking at each other...one woman is playing wid her dog, bearded guy wid yellow hat is looking at someone else, other guy wid yellow hat is looking at the bearded fellow(i am not making any assumptions on his lifestyle :D)..i could go on and on

I'll hav 2 agree with dimple tht the lady is not alone.. While eating or drinking its not necessary to look at the person sitting with u. ur ears r enough 2 stay in contact. plus it does not necessarily mean tht shes disinterested.
it is d bearded person with yellow hat who seems alone and most disinterested though in reality we do not know where he is looking at. He might be looking at a far away scenery nd relishing it. So for him he's not disinterestd!
